First Night was founded 27 years ago and modeled after an alcohol-free New Year’s Eve celebration in Boston that marked the nation’s bicentennial in 1976. The first celebration in Ocean City included 25 entertainment acts at five different locations with about 800 people attending. While other First Night events have faded, Ocean City’s has only grown more popular with families making it an annual tradition for a safe New Year’s Eve. Today, attendance is capped at 10,000 with admission buttons selling out year after year. First Night offers more than 70 opportunities to catch more than 30 different shows and activities at 22 venues throughout town. You will find entertainment that satisfies every taste and age group. To realize maximum enjoyment from First Night, plan your itinerary in advance and have a great time. The City of Ocean City’s Community Services Department organizes the event. From Crossroads of the American Revolution: Create a list of all the bad things you want to forget about 2019 on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 from 6-8pm and bring it to the Hogmanay bonfire in the Great Meadow behind the 1761 Brearley House on New Year’s Eve. This Scottish celebration has its roots in Pagan tradition. You’re invited to prepare a list in advance and bring it to the fire; the Lawrence Historical society will also have paper and pencils available if the spirit strikes you there. Enjoy bagpipe music and tour the 1761 Brearley House while you’re there! Fire Master Tom Ledwith will light the fire promptly at 6:00 p.m., and it will be extinguished at 8:00 p.m. per state fire regulations.
