It’s a prom night that will forever be remembered by those familiar with “Carrie,” the 1974 novel by Stephen King. A musical theater adaptation of the once-controversial novel will arrive at Rhino Studio 237 in Pompton Lakes beginning January 11 … and you’re invited to attend the horror genre classic.
About the show:
“In this revamped, contemporary version of the famous (and infamous) 1988 production, “Carrie: The Musical” follows a young woman with telekinetic powers,” according to Buzz Theatre Productions, the company producing the work. “An outcast at school, where she is bullied viciously for her differences, Carrie is also lost at home, with a fervently religious mother whose love traps her in its maw. When PE teacher Miss Gardner, kind classmate Sue Snell, and boyfriend Tommy Ross reach out to try and help Carrie, it seems that for once, Carrie might have a shot at being accepted. But Chris Hargensen, the class’s most vicious bully, has other ideas. Pushed to the brink, Carrie’s powers threaten to overwhelm her, and devour everyone around her in flame.”
The book was also adapted into the 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek as Carrie White and Piper Laurie as Carrie’s mother.
In 1988, the Royal Shakespeare Company produced the original version of the “Carrie: The Musical,” with a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and music by Michael Gore. The production would later have a short (and storied) run on Broadway during the same year.
King’s story stands as one of the most iconic horror-genre novels. While addressing the supernatural and religious fanaticism, the story also keys into the timeless issues of bullying and the role of the social outcast.
