Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service: Monday, January 21 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm Stop by the Stackhouse Education Center to create a unique card from recycled materials. On Valentine’s Day, your card will warm the heart of a patient in a local hospital. Appropriate for all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult. No registration is required. From MLK Jr. Day at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey: Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘what are you doing for others?’–Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “The Strength of Love,” 1963 This year, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey will open its museum and studio spaces to members of the community so that they may view the current exhibitions and participate in the creation of a community social justice quilt. The current exhibition on view features the artist Kevin Blythe Sampson, a sculptor, painter, and muralist recognized for tackling difficult issues through socially-engaged artwork. His sculptures draw spiritual energy from the community at large and reflect an intimate understanding of the contemporary African-American experience. This current exhibition incorporates drawings, a site-specific mural, and sculptures, including a recent series in porcelain that responds to both the Black and Blue Lives Matter movements. Sampson addresses these complicated issues from his perspective as an African American artist as well as a retired police officer. Community Coalition on Race Presents 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King Observance & Volunteer Fair Non-Violence in a Violent World South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race presents the 18th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance Monday, January 21, 2019 at 2:00 pm, at Columbia High School, 17 Parker Ave, Maplewood. The event is free and open to all. Hundreds of SOMA residents and friends from neighboring communities gather to honor Dr. King through music, a sharing of interfaith readings and an affirmation of Dr. King’s call to action and service. Following the celebration, there will be a Reception and Volunteer Fair at 3:30 pm in the cafeteria. Donations of food pantry items, knitting yarn, old eyeglasses, children’s books (K-5th grade) and travel-sized toiletry donations are requested.
