New Jersey’s Beer Gardens Have Authentic German Grub & Libations

You don’t have to hop a plane to Germany to indulge in homemade brats, sausages, schnitzels, and strudels. These 10 New Jersey biergartens serve classic German cuisine, imported and local beer, and other libations. Some offer communal dining and/or outdoor seating.

Not a wurst fan? Have no fear, you can even find vegetarian, gluten-free and even vegan choices at many of these spots.

Northern Jersey

Jagerstein Biergarten serves authentic and fresh German food and domestic and imported beer. Jaegerstein Biergarten has huge, warm Barvarian pretzels and also offers vegetarian dishes. Entertainment includes a DJ and live music. The food on the menu is from their own farm with free range livestock.

Pilsener Haus & Biergarten is an Austro-Hungarian biergarten. The building is actually a turn-of-the-century bier hall with an adjoining outdoor biergarten. Pilsener Haus offers seasonal specials, vegetarian fare, and gluten-free cuisine in addition to drafts and European and American craft beers by the bottle.

Hudson Hall  is a beer hall and smoke house with Eastern European and American food. In addition to their extensive beer and liquor list, Hudson Hall specializes in smoking, pickling and fermenting foods. They serve draught and bottled beers, Old and New World wines, and cocktails. Hudson Hall offers gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan selections. Hudson Hall has a DJ and live music.

364 Marin Boulevard, Jersey City

Lutze Biergarten is on the waterfront and serves food and drinks outside only. Food trucks and vendors onsite offer a variety of craft beers, cocktails, and great food. Lutze Biergarten also has games and boasts beautiful views of Manhattan. Pet-friendly. They donate to local charities and political causes that benefit Jersey City.

Harborside, 3 Second Street, Jersey City

Zeppelin Hall Biergarten has indoor and outdoor community tables. They import their Bavarian pretzels from Munich. Zeppelin Hall’s menu includes German favorites and also American foods to be enjoyed with imported beer and American craft beers. Vegetarian options. Live music on Fridays.

88 Grand Street (at Liberty View Drive), Jersey City

The Rathskeller at Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen is housed in the basement of the former Vail Mansion and was once Morristown’s jail cell. The Rathskeller is open as a Beer Hall on Friday and Saturday nights. The Rathskeller serves delicious German and American food as well as drafts, bottled, and can beers. Live music on Friday nights.

110 South Street, Morristown 

Revolution, A Social Brew House makes all their cuisine from scratch and offers a modern take on traditional German biergarten cuisine including wurst pizza.  They have draughts and craft beer on the menu. Revolution sources their foods from farms in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Live music.

Redd’s Biergarten is very close to The Prudential Center. Reid’s food menu is diverse with American and German cuisine and even includes a vegan wurst. They serve a multitude of imported and domestic drafts. The biergarten is filled with big screen televisions to watch the games. Fun for an evening out or before or after concerts and sports events.

Central Jersey

Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten has the same owners as The Pilsner House. Their menu offers authentic Austro-Hungarian food including some vegetarian fare. Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten serves premium draft beer and bottles ranging from imported to craft domestic beer. Communal seating and a rooftop biergarten with ocean views. Live music.

527 Lake Avenue, Asbury Park

Nik’s Wunderbar Craft House has a diverse menu including several authentic German entrees and lots of libations. Nik’s Underbar uses local produce and seafood and their meat is antibiotic free. Their beer garden outside has a small bar with 6 brews on draft. The inside bar has 35 taps, plus Nik’s has a communal beer hall adjacent to the bar. Live music.
