Your aspiring performer needn’t head to Hollywood (or even NYC) for the summer: New Jersey’s performing arts camps offer training in singing, improv, dancing, acting, and more. There are dozens of performing arts camps in New Jersey where your camper can hone her skills.

New Jersey Acting-Performing Arts Theater offers improv comedy, musical theater, intensive acting, dance, and acting for film and TV. SummerStage is for grades 7-12. The Tween Specialty Camp accommodate campers in grades 6 and 8. The Teen Specialty Camps welcome grades 9-12.
Cresskill Performing Arts teaches preschoolers (3-5 years old) jazz and ballet dancing, gymnastics, rhythm instruments, creative movement and music, and art projects. Older children (6-8) also participate in jazz, ballet, tap, and hip-hop dancing as well as acting/theater games, improv, fencing, gymnastics, and art projects. Preteens and teens (9 to “teens”) experiment with jazz, ballet, acting/theater games, improv, modern, tap, hip-hop, gymnastics, musical theater, choreography, fencing, on-camera technique, and art projects.
The Performing Art School at bergenPAC offers theater games, dance combinations, choreography, music appreciation, singing, acting the song, and more. Campers perform on the berganPAC stage. Babies (3 months) to 4 1/2 years old enjoy music, finger plays, and instruments accompanied by a parent. Performing Arts Musical Theater Camp is available for children ages 5-12, and the Summer Musical is for 12-21 year olds.
The Acting Space provides instruction in auditioning, staging, and performing musical plays. Acting singing, and dancing techniques are explored. At the end of the program the campers give a final performance at the Barrow Mansion Theater. There’s also a musical theater class where campers perform vignettes, scenes, and songs from popular Disney musicals and practice action, acting, improv, movement, expression, dance, drama, and singing for acting scenes. Plays for children from 5-13 years old are available all 11 weeks. The children’s and teens’ play (10-18) is rehearsed the last 3 weeks.
Performers Theatre Workshop teaches singing, dancing, and acting. Day trips, NYC showcases, and classes are included. The Junior Camp offers 4-8 year olds lessons in acting, dancing and singing classes, culminating in a performance in Maplewood. The Senior Camp sharpens campers’ (ages 9-18) acting, dancing, and singing skills. Session 1 focuses on acting, dancing, or both. Session 2 ends with a performance in the Broadway Theatre District. Session 3 features workshops with industry professionals and seeing 2 Broadway Shows in New York.
The Summer Theater Camp of Montclair provides personalized acting training, theater games, and rehearsal with a production and a cast party with family and friends. Little Summer Stars is for 5-8 year olds. Your World! Your Stage! Your Story! is for ages 7-11 and 12-16 year olds and involves improv, stage combat, and acting and movement exercise. The Main Stage Camp is for 8-11 and 12-16 year olds and consists of personalized acting training, theater games, rehearsals, and a final production in full costume.
NJPAC has 3 camper levels: Apprentice Division campers (10-16 year olds) explore voice, dance, and devised (collaborative and often improv) theater. Artisan Division (12-18) engage in voice, dance, and devised theater and create a performing arts portfolio. Advanced Division (12-18) campers select dance, devised theater, or musical theater and concentrate on just one discipline. Artisan and Advanced Division participants are required to audition for the camp. Other programs include an all-female jazz residency, a hip hop intensive class, a jazz R&B intensive, NJPAC filmmakers, and more.
All Children’s Theater will help you camper master singing, comedy, dancing, and scenery design with their Creative Dramatics/Comedy class. Attendees develop, write, and perform the shows. For 6-17 year olds.
Class Act Performing Art Studio focuses on dancing, singing, and acting. Broadway Babies (3-6 year olds) sing, act, dance and have a performance the last day. Spotlight Sensations (for 7-13 year olds) create a 30 minute musical music review consisting of singing, dancing, and dialogue which they perform in a matinee and an evening show. They also have an iStar in iMovie where campers write and perform their own movie. iStar is for 10-14 year olds.
Taubenslag Productions at Middlesex County College produces 7 musicals in 8 weeks (week 7 and 8 are devoted to the ”Broadway Spectacular”) and also includes swimming every day, scavenger hunts, tie dye, charades, sing down, relay races, carnival, Mardi Gras, outdoor games, arts & crafts, theatrical workshops, dances, and much more. Children going into first grade to 16 year olds are eligible for Taubenlag Productions camp.
All Children’s Theater will help your camper master singing, comedy, dancing, and scenery design with their Broadway Kids class. Attendees develop. write, and perform the shows. For children 6-17 years old.
McCarter Theater Center camp classes sell out fast and some have waiting lists. You can still enroll in Solo Performance, Musical Theater Lab, and Children’s Book play adaptations. McCarter is putting campers on waiting lists for Musical Theater Workshop, Scene Study, Improv, Creating Short Original Plays, and Story Telling. For children going into 1st grade to 12th grade.
Kelsey Camp at Mercer County Community College students select a major concentration in either the theater, dance, vocal music, or visual arts. Electives include painting, drawing, jazz dance, musical theater, children’s theater, a cappella singing, hip hop, vocal ensemble, comedy, music video and web video. Kelsey Kids Playshops is for kindergarten to 5th grade children. For the 5th to 12th graders Kelsey offers Tomato Patch Summer Workshop.
Musical Theatre School Washington Township offers dance camp, acting, performing, voice, theater, film, video film product camp, technical theater camp, and more. The Broadway Babies program is for children entering kindergarten and 1st grade. Kids Stuff is for those going into 2nd and 3rd grade. Young people entering 4th and 5th grades are in the Apprentice program. Children’s Theater is for 6th to 12th grades.
Appel Farm Arts Camp is a fine arts camp as well as a performing arts camp. Children choose a minor and a major including both genres. Performing classes include acting, theatrical design and construction (set, lighting sound), piano, recording arts, string instruments, wind and woodwind instruments, rock vocal, Rockestra (electric guitar and electric bass), acoustic guitar, percussion, ballet, costume design, chorus, orchestra, jazz band, concert band, rock band, modern and jazz dance, improv and comedic acting, stage combat, stage management, choreography, dance for musical theater, tap, folk dance, and more. Campers are between 7 and 17.
Haddonfield Theater Arts Center has several camp options. Your camper will practice improvisational games, work on monologue and scenes, sing, learn movement, and more. They also teach the children and teens how to handle auditions. The four week intensive summer camp program culminates in a “full scale musical.” HTAC offers a full professional staff of working actors and Broadway veterans. Haddonfield Theater Arts Center welcomes 9 to 18 year olds.
The Broadway Theatre will teach your child how to perform live on stage with lessons in singing, acting, and dancing. Campers will perform at the Broadway Theatre at the end of camp. Campers are divided into ages 5-9, 10-13, and 14-18 and each group rehearses and produces a play.
Voorhees Theatre Company allows campers to perform in the Summer musical or to learn the disciplines of technical theatre–including set design and construction, lighting, sound, and stage crew. Ages include 3rd to 8th graders.
