Whether you’re an equestrian or simply love watching the sport, the Mars Essex Horse Trials is the place to be. Following a 19-year hiatus, the historic event resumed last June with two exciting days of eventing competition for beginner novice through preliminary levels.
This year, the Mars Essex Horse Trials will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24 in Far Hills, offering a weekend packed with events and activities that will appeal to riders and spectators alike.
A History of the Horse Trials
The event began in the 1960s as a competition for young riders and quickly evolved into an iconic pre-Olympic-qualifying three-day event held at the United States Equestrian Team (USET) headquarters in Gladstone until 1998, where the best-of-the-best competed for U.S. Team positions at both the Olympic Games and World Championships.
When the event returned in 2017, it began as a two-event and found a new home at Moorland Farm, located on 230 bucolic acres, home to the iconic Far Hills Race Meeting steeplechase event, which attracts over 40,000 spectators each fall.
Something for everyone
In addition to the opportunity to watching equestrians of varying levels, attendees will find plenty to keep them entertained. The following activities are planned for the event:
Classic Car Show
The Essex Market
The Essex Market offers something for everyone, equestrian and non-equestrian alike – whether the saddle or riding boots of your dreams, a unique piece of jewelry to commemorate the weekend or a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork for your home. Top-quality vendors representing a wide variety of carefully curated goods and services will be on hand all weekend to explore and entice.
Exciting equestrian action in an amazing venue. Unique shopping and entertainment offerings for everyone to enjoy. A special day’s outing in the beautiful New Jersey countryside. What better way to work up an appetite for the best of what local markets and food purveyors have to offer! The Essex Horse Trials’ home at Moorland Farm, centered in the “Garden State,” provides a perfect backdrop to feature local foodie favorites and specialty local food vendors to those looking for a taste of something to go, or all the makings for a gourmet picnic on the grounds. All you need is the blanket and basket!
