The 6th Annual ‘Bizarre Bazaar’ Puts the Fun — and Local — in Holiday Shopping

Studio B's Bizarre Bazaar

From Studio B:

Imagine having fun while shopping! You can at The 6th Annual Holiday Bizarre Bazaar, December 2 in Maplewood, NJ!

Does strolling around the aisles of an artistic wonderland full of handmade delights sound like a shopping fantasy? How about all of that while sipping hot chocolate? And what if you were able to check off your holiday list while listening to amazing live music, and having your picture taken with a handsome non-denominational snowman?

It’s not only possible. It’s happening on Sunday, December 2nd.

Studio B is continuing its tradition of connecting incredibly talented local artists with the audiences of the greater Essex County community. The Bizarre Bazaar was started as a way of creating business opportunities for artists, but – now in its 6th year –it has become much more than that. More and more shoppers return every year for something they don’t experience shopping online or at a mall.

“We want to create good vibes. There is so much stress around the holiday season, we’re all about making this shopping experience as warm, fun, and creative as it can be,” says Marcy Thompson, Studio B Honcho.

“The better the atmosphere, the more audiences can really appreciate the great work that our artists are doing,” adds Jenny Turner Hall, Studio B Honcho. “Shoppers at the Bazaar can get to know the person whose work they’re buying. They can learn about how it was made. Can you do that while you’re clicking through websites?”

The 40 artists chosen to participate at the Bazaar go through a rigorous and competitive application process. “We’re looking for unique voices, and quality above all else,” says Thompson. “We’re also looking for a special something that adds to the quirkiness of our show.”

That quirkiness is what makes this Bazaar bizarre. “It’s a playful idea – it’s about taking the seriousness out of ‘art’ but never sacrificing quality or vision. And it’s what helps create those good vibes,” says Turner Hall.

Chosen from over 100 applicants, the artists selected for the Bazaar this year will bring their handmade jewelry, fine art, sewn and knitted textiles, paper goods, amazing vintage finds, hand-forged leather, holiday delights, eclectic evening bags, home décor, handmade clothing and a thousand things beyond description. The only thing that all of these items have in common? They are all 100 percent unique.

Back again this year is the lovable Abominable Snowman, who will gladly let you snap a selfie with him on his Woodland throne – for just a $5 donation to Studio B. The Bizarre Bazaar is made possible through the sponsorship of the Maplewood Department of Cultural Affairs.
