Shoppers in the market for unique finds can check out the highly-aniticapted Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills Rummage Sale Friday, May 4, Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6, (Friday & Saturday: 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Sunday: 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.) at Far Hills Fairgrounds.
Paula Some, communications manager for the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills, shared a bit about the history of the event.
“Our Rummage Sale started in 1921 as part of the Far Hills Horse Show,” she explained. “When the show stopped in 1937, we continued the sale as an independent event. What started as the effort of a few women summering in New Jersey has grown into a 75,000 biannual sale with over 450 volunteers and a traditional that embodies the generosity and spirit of the entire community.”
While the three-day shopping extravaganza is a delight for those who love to discover one-of-a-kind items, the sale provides much-needed support in the Garden State and beyond.
“First-time shoppers are always astounded at the size of our Rummage Sale and the enormous variety of merchandise, all cleaned, and well-displayed,” Some said. “We receive lots of inquiries about whether we sell certain kinds of items. It really is worth the trip! In addition to the fun of bargain-hunting, both merchandise donors and shoppers should also know that we are truly grateful for their participation and attendance, and that funds raised benefit patients, families and caregivers throughout the community.”
Proceeds from the sale provide home health and hospice care to families in need, along with other wellness services not covered by any insurance.
From clothing and jewelry to children’s toys and books, there’s something for everyone at the sale. Shoppers are also heartened to hear that unsold items find good homes as well.
“Shoppers and donors can also feel confident do our best to make sure unsold items help those in need, whether in our local community or around the world. We have a carefully vetted list of charities that take leftover merchandise after the sale. Our books have even ended up at a children’s library in Ethiopia,” said Some.
Some said shoppers can preview the sale online days before it begins via Facebook.
